OCDETF operation results in 30 year prison sentence

On Behalf of Katherine A. Gonos, Attorney at Law | Dec 8, 2022 | Drug Charges |

Felony charges have devastating effects on the future of anyone facing them. The more evidence against someone, the more likely these charges result in years of prison time and thousands of dollars in fines.

Defending against these charges may seem overwhelming. This stress may increase when major task forces involve themselves in an investigation. The Department of Justice reports on a recent case where gang activity resulted in major criminal sentencing for the parties involved.

Drug conspiracies in Georgia

A 39-year-old gang member received a sentence of 360 months in prison. Three other co-defendants pleaded guilty. They received sentences ranging from time served with probation and up to 60 months in prison.

Charges range from the distribution of methamphetamine and fentanyl to tampering with a witness. Reports document that the gang member facing the longest prison sentence intended to transport over 10 pounds of methamphetamine to a customer in South Carolina.

It is not clear whether the co-defendants’ guilty pleas resulted in lesser sentences for them or a longer sentence for the 39-year-old.

Criminal charges that add up

Felony charges come with heavy penalties. Even if a charge results in 12 months of prison time, that time away from home and work may result in lifelong consequences. Felony charges may even limit job opportunities, gun ownership or voting rights in Georgia.

In cases with major investigations, there are processes the system must follow to preserve a defendant’s rights. There are options to face these allegations with the proper information and resources. A successful defense may result in acquittals, dismissals or reduction in sentences depending on the case.
