The dangers of drunk driving among college students

On Behalf of Katherine A. Gonos, Attorney at Law | Oct 10, 2023 | Drunk Driving |

Drunk driving is a serious problem in the United States. The National Highway Safety Commission reports 1.5 million drunk driving arrests each year. This reckless behavior can impact the lives of those in the vehicle as well as their families, friends and the community at large.

One of the alarming aspects of the drunk driving issue is its prevalence among college students. The combination of newfound independence and peer pressure can lead young adults to make poor decisions. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), about 1,825 college students die each year from alcohol-related injuries, including drunk driving accidents.

Risks and consequences

Drunk driving poses significant risks to everyone on the road. Alcohol impairs a person’s ability to make sound judgments and react quickly to changing situations. Legal consequences can be severe. Driving drunk can result in fines, license suspension, mandatory alcohol education programs and even imprisonment. These penalties can have a lasting impact on a student’s academic and professional future.

Strategies to prevent drunk driving

College campuses and communities should take proactive measures to prevent drunk driving incidents. Some strategies include:

Education. Colleges should provide alcohol education programs that teach students about responsible drinking.

Safe transportation. Shuttle services or designated drivers would encourage students to make responsible choices

Zero-tolerance policies. A zero-tolerance policy for drunk driving can discourage students from taking the risk.

Support systems. Create support systems where students can seek help without fear of punishment.

Student responsibility

With 49% of college students reporting alcohol consumption within the last month, the responsibility to discourage drunk driving does not lie solely with the school. College students must understand the potential consequences of impaired driving. Responsible choices and looking out for one another can help prevent tragic results.

Drunk driving is a serious issue that affects college students and their communities. By raising awareness, implementing preventive measures and fostering responsible behavior, it is possible to reduce the incidence of drunk driving among young adults.
